How to Enable and Configure Snapping in Kdenlive
In this guide, you will learn how to quickly enable, disable, and configure the snapping feature on the Kdenlive timeline. Snapping is an essential tool for precise video editing, ensuring your video clips, audio tracks, cuts, and transitions align perfectly with the playhead, guides, and other clips without leaving accidental gaps. This article covers the toolbar toggles, keyboard shortcuts, and advanced configuration settings to help you streamline your editing workflow.
How to Enable and Disable Snapping
By default, snapping is usually enabled in Kdenlive, but it can easily be toggled on or off depending on your editing needs.
- Using the Timeline Toolbar: Locate the timeline
toolbar (usually positioned just above or below the timeline tracks).
Look for the Magnet icon.
- If the magnet icon is highlighted/colored, snapping is active.
- If the magnet icon is grayed out, snapping is disabled. Click the icon to toggle it.
- Using the Keyboard Shortcut: You can quickly toggle
snapping on and off while editing by pressing the
Gkey on your keyboard. - Using the Menu Bar: Go to the top menu and select Timeline, then click on Snap to check or uncheck the feature.
How to Configure Snapping Settings
If the default snapping behavior feels too sensitive or not sensitive enough, you can adjust the snap threshold in Kdenlive’s settings.
- Open the Configuration Menu:
- On Windows/Linux: Go to Settings > Configure Kdenlive…
- On macOS: Go to Kdenlive > Preferences…
- Navigate to Timeline Settings: In the left-hand sidebar of the configuration window, click on the Timeline tab.
- Adjust the Snap Threshold:
- Look for the setting labeled Snap threshold (pixels).
- This value determines how close a clip needs to be to another clip, guide, or playhead before it automatically snaps into place.
- Increase the value (e.g., to 15 or 20 pixels) if you want clips to snap together from further away.
- Decrease the value (e.g., to 5 pixels) if you want more control and prefer to get clips very close before they snap.
- Save Changes: Click Apply and then OK to save your new settings.
Temporary Snapping Override
If you have snapping permanently enabled but need to make a highly precise adjustment without turning the feature off entirely, you can temporarily disable it. Hold down the Shift key while dragging a clip on the timeline to temporarily bypass the snapping grid. Releasing the Shift key will instantly re-enable snapping.
