How to Denoise Video in Kdenlive

Low-light videography often introduces unwanted digital noise and grain, reducing the professional quality of your footage. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to locate, apply, and configure the denoise effects in Kdenlive to clean up grainy video clips and restore visual clarity to your projects.

Step 1: Import and Add Your Footage to the Timeline

Open Kdenlive and import your noisy, low-light video clip into the Project Bin. Drag and drop the clip onto your video track on the timeline.

Step 2: Locate the Denoise Effect

1. Navigate to the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left or center-left panel). If you do not see it, enable it by going to the top menu and selecting View > Effects.
2. In the search bar of the Effects panel, type Denoise.
3. Kdenlive offers a few denoising options depending on your operating system and installed plugins. The most common and reliable built-in effect is hqdn3d (High Quality 3D Denoise). You may also see an effect simply named Denoise.

• Temporal Luma / Chroma: Controls noise reduction by comparing consecutive frames. This is highly effective for static noise but can cause “ghosting” or motion blur on fast-moving objects if set too high.

Step 5: Preview and Render

Denoising is a CPU-intensive process, which may cause your timeline preview to lag. 1. Use the Timeline Preview rendering feature (press Shift + R after defining a zone) to render a small portion of your timeline for smooth playback. 2.
