How to Create Animated Warp Effect in Kdenlive

This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply and animate a warp distortion effect on a video layer in Kdenlive. You will learn how to locate the distortion effects, apply them to your timeline footage, and use keyframes to animate the strength and shape of the warp over time for dynamic visual transitions.

Step 1: Add Your Video to the Timeline

  1. Open Kdenlive and import your video clip into the Project Bin.
  2. Drag and drop the video clip onto a video track in the Timeline.

Step 2: Locate and Apply the Distortion Effect

  1. Go to the Effects panel (usually located on the left or bottom-left of the screen. If it is not visible, enable it via View > Effects).
  2. In the search bar of the Effects panel, type Wave or Distort.
  3. Locate the Wave effect (under the Distort category). This effect simulates a liquid, warping movement.
  4. Drag and drop the Wave effect directly onto your video clip in the timeline.

  2. Create the Peak Warp: Move the playhead forward in time to where you want the warp distortion to be at its strongest. Adjust the Amplitude and Wavelength sliders to your desired distortion intensity. Kdenlive will automatically create a new keyframe at this position.
  3. Resolve the Warp: Move the playhead further down the timeline to where the effect should end. Add another keyframe and set the Amplitude and Speed parameters back to 0 to smoothly transition the video back to its original, undistorted state.
