How to Create an Off-Center Vignette in Kdenlive
This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to apply and customize the Vignette effect in Kdenlive to highlight an off-center subject. You will learn how to locate the effect, apply it to your footage, and adjust the positioning coordinates to shift the focal point away from the center of the screen.
Step 1: Apply the Vignette Effect
First, import your video footage into Kdenlive and drag it onto the timeline. Open the Effects tab (typically located in the bottom-left or top-left pane) and type “Vignette” into the search bar. Drag and drop the Vignette effect directly onto your video clip in the timeline.
Step 2: Access the Effect Stack
Click on the video clip in your timeline to select it. This will display the effect’s parameters in the Properties or Effect Stack panel, usually located in the middle-right area of the Kdenlive interface.
Step 3: Shift the Vignette Center
By default, the vignette’s focal point is locked to the dead center of the frame. To move it to an off-center subject, locate the following coordinates in the Effect Stack: * Center X (Horizontal Position): Adjust this slider to move the bright focal area left or right. Decreasing the value moves the center to the left, while increasing it moves it to the right. * Center Y (Vertical Position): Adjust this slider to move the focal area up or down. Decreasing the value moves it upward, while increasing it moves it downward.
Align these coordinates until the unshaded, clear circle sits directly over your off-center subject.
Step 4: Fine-Tune the Appearance
Once the focal point is positioned correctly, use the remaining sliders to blend the effect seamlessly into your footage: * Radius: Adjusts the size of the clear focal area. * Softness: Controls the feathering of the vignette edges. Higher softness creates a subtle, gradual transition, while lower softness creates a more defined, dramatic spotlight effect. * Opacity / Strength: Controls how dark the outer edges of the vignette appear.
