How to Change Preview Resolution in Kdenlive
Editing high-resolution video can cause significant lag during real-time playback in your timeline. This guide explains how to adjust the timeline preview resolution in Kdenlive to ensure a smooth editing workflow without affecting the quality of your final exported video.
Method 1: Use the Preview Resolution Dropdown
The quickest way to lower playback resolution during editing is by using the real-time scaling feature in the Project Monitor.
- Look at the bottom-right corner of the Project Monitor window (the player showing your video preview).
- Locate the Preview Resolution dropdown menu (it may
display a fraction like
1:1,1/2,1/4or a resolution like720p). - Click the dropdown and select a lower resolution (such as
1/4or360p). - Play your timeline. The video quality in the monitor will decrease, but playback performance will improve significantly.
Method 2: Configure Timeline Preview Rendering
If your timeline has heavy effects or transitions, you can pre-render specific parts of your timeline at a lower resolution.
- Go to the top menu and select Project > Project Settings.
- Click on the Timeline Preview tab.
- Under the Preview Profile section, select a lower-resolution codec (for example, a low-resolution DNxHR or MPEG-2 profile). This determines the quality of the temporary render files.
- Click OK to save the settings.
- Define a rendering zone in your timeline using the I (In) and O (Out) keys.
- Press Shift + R (or go to Timeline > Render Preview) to render the selected zone. The timeline ruler will turn green, indicating a smooth, pre-rendered preview.
Why This Does Not Affect Your Final Export
Kdenlive treats editing previews and final rendering as completely separate processes. The resolutions set in the steps above only apply to what you see inside the software while editing. When you are ready to export your project:
- Click the Render button (or press Ctrl + Enter).
- Choose your desired high-quality export preset (such as MP4 H.264/AAC).
- Ensure the Full project option is selected. Kdenlive will use your original source files to encode the final video at maximum quality, completely ignoring the lower-resolution preview settings.
