How to Change Keyframe Interpolation in Kdenlive
This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to adjust the keyframe interpolation types—such as linear, discrete, or smooth—for a transforming clip in the Kdenlive video editor. By changing these settings, you can control the acceleration, deceleration, and overall transition style of your video effects and animations.
Step 1: Apply the Transform Effect
To begin animating a clip, you must first apply an effect that supports keyframing, such as the Transform effect. 1. Drag and drop your video or image clip onto the Kdenlive timeline. 2. Go to the Effects panel (usually located in the bottom-left or top-left tab group). 3. Search for Transform and drag the effect onto your clip in the timeline. 4. Select the clip to open the Effect/Composition Stack properties window.
Step 2: Add Keyframes
Before changing interpolation types, you need at least two keyframes to create a transition. 1. In the Effect Stack, look at the keyframe ruler under the Transform parameters. 2. Move the playhead to the desired starting position and click the Add keyframe icon (the small diamond) or double-click on the keyframe ruler. 3. Move the playhead further down the timeline, adjust the position, scale, or rotation of the clip, and add a second keyframe.
Step 3: Change the Interpolation Type
Kdenlive allows you to change the interpolation type for each individual keyframe to alter how the program calculates the movement between them. 1. In the keyframe ruler of the Transform effect, right-click on the specific keyframe (the diamond icon) you want to modify. 2. A context menu will appear showing the available interpolation types: * Linear: Moves the clip at a constant speed from one keyframe to the next. This is the default setting. * Discrete: Holds the value of the current keyframe until the timeline reaches the next keyframe, resulting in an instant jump rather than a smooth transition. * Smooth: Smooths out the acceleration and deceleration (easing in and out) for a more natural, organic motion. 3. Select your preferred interpolation type from the list. The shape of the keyframe icon on the ruler will change to reflect the selected interpolation type.
