How to Change Kdenlive Project Monitor Background Color

By default, Kdenlive displays a checkerboard pattern in the Project Monitor to represent transparent areas in your video timeline. This guide provides straightforward instructions on how to swap this checkerboard pattern for a solid background color, either by adjusting the global monitor settings or by utilizing a color clip in your timeline.

Method 1: Change the Monitor Background in Settings

To change the default checkerboard background to a solid black or white background within the application settings:

  1. Open Kdenlive.
  2. In the top menu bar, navigate to Settings and select Configure Kdenlive… (On macOS, go to Kdenlive > Preferences).
  3. In the configuration window, click on the Monitor tab in the left-hand sidebar.
  4. Locate the Monitor Background section.
  5. Change the selection from Theme/Checkerboard to Black or your preferred default preset.
  6. Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

Method 2: Create a Custom Color Background Using a Color Clip

If you need a specific custom color (such as a green screen or brand-specific hex code) as your background, the most effective method is to insert a Color Clip directly into your timeline:

  1. Go to the Project Bin window.
  2. Click the Add Clip or Folder dropdown arrow (the “+” icon) and select Add Color Clip.
  3. In the color properties window, click on the color bar to open the color picker. Select your desired custom color or input a specific Hex/RGB value, then click OK.
  4. Name your clip and click OK to add it to your Project Bin.
  5. Drag the new Color Clip from the Project Bin onto the lowest video track in your timeline (e.g., Track V1).
  6. Drag the edge of the Color Clip to stretch it across the entire duration of your video project.

Any transparent clips placed on the tracks above (e.g., Track V2 or V3) will now overlay seamlessly on top of your custom background color.
