How to Adjust Audio Volume in Kdenlive

Adjusting the volume of your audio clips is a fundamental step in video editing to ensure your project’s sound is clear and balanced. This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to adjust the overall volume of an audio clip in Kdenlive using the Volume effect, timeline track controls, and the Audio Mixer.

Method 1: Using the Volume (Keyframable) Effect

This is the most precise way to adjust the volume of an individual audio clip on your timeline.

  1. Select the Clip: Click on the audio clip in your timeline that you want to adjust.
  2. Open the Effects Tab: Go to the Effects panel (usually located in the top-left or bottom-left of the interface). If you cannot see it, enable it via the top menu by selecting View > Effects.
  3. Find the Volume Effect: In the search bar of the Effects panel, type Volume. Look for the effect named Volume (Keyframable).
  4. Apply the Effect: Drag and drop the Volume (Keyframable) effect directly onto your audio clip.
  5. Adjust the Volume:
    • Look at the Effect/Composition Stack panel (usually in the top-right).
    • Locate the Gain slider.
    • Drag the slider to the right to increase the volume (positive dB) or to the left to decrease it (negative dB). Double-clicking the slider resets it to 0 dB.

Method 2: Adjusting the Entire Track Volume

If you want to change the volume of all audio clips on a specific track simultaneously, you can use the track header control.

  1. Locate the Track Header: Go to the left side of the timeline where your track names (e.g., Audio 1, Audio 2) are listed.
  2. Adjust the Volume Slider: Click and drag the volume slider next to the speaker icon on that specific track. Moving it left decreases the volume, while moving it right increases it.

Method 3: Using the Audio Mixer

For a more visual, real-time approach during playback, use Kdenlive’s Audio Mixer.

  1. Open the Audio Mixer: Go to the top menu and select View > Audio Mixer to display the mixer panel.
  2. Play Your Project: Press the spacebar to play your timeline.
  3. Adjust the Faders: Locate the channel that corresponds to your audio track (or use the Master channel to adjust the overall project volume). Drag the volume faders up or down to find the perfect level.
