How to Add a Counter Clip in Kdenlive

This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to insert and customize a Counter generator clip in Kdenlive. You will learn how to locate the generator tool, configure its settings to display counting numbers or timecodes, and successfully place it onto your video editing timeline.

Step 1: Access the Counter Generator

To create a counter, you must use Kdenlive’s built-in generator tool.

  1. Open your Kdenlive project.
  2. Go to the Project Bin window (usually located in the top-left area).
  3. Right-click on any empty space inside the Project Bin.
  4. Hover over Add Generator in the context menu and select Counter.

Step 2: Configure the Counter Settings

Once you select “Counter,” a properties dialog box will appear. Here, you can customize how the counting numbers behave and look:

Click OK when you are finished configuring the settings. The new Counter clip will now appear in your Project Bin.

Step 3: Insert the Counter into the Timeline

To display the counter in your video, you need to add it to your editing tracks:

  1. Click and hold the Counter clip in your Project Bin.
  2. Drag and drop the clip onto a video track in your timeline.
  3. If you want the counter to overlay on top of existing footage, place the Counter clip on a track above your main video track (for example, on Video 2 if your background video is on Video 1).

Step 4: Adjust and Fine-Tune (Optional)

If you need to change the size or position of the counter on the screen:

  1. Select the Counter clip on your timeline.
  2. Go to the Effects tab and search for the Transform effect.
  3. Drag the Transform effect onto your Counter clip.
  4. Use the onscreen guides in the Project Monitor to resize, scale, or reposition the numbers to your desired location.
