Fix Strobe Light Banding in Kdenlive
Video footage captured under certain artificial lighting, such as LEDs or fluorescent bulbs, often suffers from horizontal lines or rapid brightness changes known as strobe light banding. This article outlines the step-by-step process of using Kdenlive’s built-in “Deflicker” effect to eliminate these distracting artifacts and stabilize the exposure of your video clips.
Step 1: Add Your Footage to the Timeline
Open Kdenlive and import the flickering video clip into your Project Bin. Drag and drop the clip onto the timeline to begin editing.
Step 2: Locate the Deflicker Effect
Go to the Effects tab (typically located in the bottom-left or center panel of the Kdenlive interface). In the search bar at the top of the Effects panel, type “Deflicker”.
Step 3: Apply the Effect to the Clip
Drag the Deflicker effect from the search results and drop it directly onto the problematic video clip on your timeline. You can also select the clip first, then double-click the Deflicker effect to apply it.
Step 4: Configure the Deflicker Settings
With the clip selected, look at the Effect/Composition Stack panel (usually on the top right) to adjust the Deflicker parameters:
- Block Size: This controls the size of the pixel blocks the filter analyzes. Larger blocks are ideal for global screen flicker, while smaller blocks target localized banding.
- Step Size: This controls the search step size for matching blocks. Adjust this if the banding frequency is high.
- Smoothing: This defines how many frames are averaged together to smooth out the brightness fluctuations. Increase this value if the strobe effect is highly rapid.
Step 5: Preview and Fine-Tune
Play back the timeline to check the results. Because the Deflicker effect requires significant processing power, the preview may lag. Use Kdenlive’s Timeline Preview feature (by pressing Shift + R to render a preview zone) to watch the corrected footage in real-time. If the banding remains, slightly increase the Block Size or Smoothing values until the image stabilizes.
