Fix Crushed Blacks and Clipped Highlights in Kdenlive

In video editing, improper exposure can lead to lost detail in the darkest shadows (crushed blacks) or brightest highlights (clipped highlights). This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to use the “Levels” effect in Kdenlive to restore these details, balance your video’s dynamic range, and achieve a professional color grade.

Step 1: Open the Waveform Monitor

Before adjusting your video levels, you need a visual guide to avoid relying solely on an uncalibrated monitor. 1. Go to the top menu and select View > Scopes > Waveform. 2. This scope displays your video’s luminance from 0 (pure black/shadows) to 100 (pure white/highlights). 3. If your waveform data is flattened at the very bottom (0), your blacks are crushed. If it is flattened at the very top (100), your highlights are clipped.

Step 2: Apply the Levels Effect

  1. Navigate to the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left pane).
  2. In the search bar, type Levels.
  3. Drag and drop the Levels effect directly onto the video clip in your timeline.
  4. Open the Effect/Composition Stack tab to access the effect’s parameters.

To recover detail in the shadow areas: 1. Locate the Input Black slider. Dragging this slider to the right increases the contrast in the darker areas of your video. 2. Locate the Output Black slider. If your blacks are too harsh or “crushed” into pure black, drag this slider slightly to the right. This raises the minimum black level, turning pure blacks into dark grays and revealing lost shadow details. 3. Adjust the Gamma (middle slider) to the right to lift the midtones and shadows without affecting the absolute black point.

Step 4: Fix Clipped Highlights (Brights)

To tone down overexposed highlights and recover detail: 1. Locate the Input White slider. Adjusting this to the left increases the brightness of the lighter areas. 2. Locate the Output White slider. If your highlights are clipped or “blown out” at pure white, drag this slider to the left. This lowers the maximum white level, softening the bright spots and bringing clipped details back into a viewable range.

Step 5: Fine-Tune and Compare

  1. Use the Gamma slider to balance the overall exposure. Moving it left darkens the midtones, while moving it right brightens them.
  2. Toggle the eye icon next to the Levels effect in the Effect Stack to turn the effect on and off. This allows you to compare your adjusted footage with the original clip to ensure your corrections look natural.
