Export Individual Clip from Kdenlive Timeline
This article provides a quick and straightforward guide on how to render and export a single clip or a specific section from your Kdenlive timeline without processing the entire project. By utilizing the timeline zone feature, you can quickly isolate any portion of your video and export it directly to a file, saving both time and system resources.
Step 1: Define the Zone in the Timeline
To export a specific clip, you must first tell Kdenlive which part of the timeline you want to render by setting “In” and “Out” points.
- Move the playhead (timeline cursor) to the exact start of the clip you want to export.
- Press the I key on your keyboard (or click the Set Zone In button below the project monitor) to set the starting point.
- Move the playhead to the exact end of the clip.
- Press the O key on your keyboard (or click the Set Zone Out button below the project monitor) to set the ending point.
You will see a blue highlighted bar (the “Zone”) appear at the top of your timeline, spanning the exact length of the clip you wish to export.
Step 2: Open the Render Settings
Once your zone is selected, you need to open the rendering menu to configure your export settings.
- Click the red Render button in the top toolbar, or press Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on macOS).
- The Render dialog window will appear.
Step 3: Switch to “Selected Zone”
By default, Kdenlive is set to render the entire project. You must change this setting to render only your selected clip.
- Look at the bottom-left section of the Render dialog window under the Render Project options.
- Change the selection from Full Project to Selected Zone.
Step 4: Choose Format and Export
With the zone selected, you are ready to generate your file.
- Select your preferred output format (such as MP4, WebM, or ProRes) from the presets list.
- In the Output file field at the top, choose your destination folder and name your file.
- Click the Render to File button at the bottom of the window.
Kdenlive will now render only the isolated clip within your defined In and Out points, leaving the rest of your project untouched.
