Does Kdenlive Automatically Transcode Media on Import?

This article explains how Kdenlive handles media transcoding during the import process. You will learn about Kdenlive’s automatic prompts for transcoding variable frame rate (VFR) footage, how to configure the software to convert files into edit-friendly formats, and how to use automatic proxy clips to improve timeline performance.

Kdenlive’s Transcoding Behavior on Import

Kdenlive does not silently transcode every imported media file by default, as this would unnecessarily consume disk space and processing power. Instead, Kdenlive analyzes files upon import and will automatically prompt you to transcode them if they are in a format that is poorly suited for editing.

This most commonly occurs with Variable Frame Rate (VFR) footage, which is typical of smartphone recordings and screen captures. When you drag a VFR clip into the Project Bin, Kdenlive detects it and displays a dialog box asking if you want to transcode the file to a Constant Frame Rate (CFR) format, such as edit-friendly DNxHR, ProRes, or lossless Ut Video.

How to Configure Automatic Transcoding

If you want to customize how Kdenlive handles transcoding during import, you can adjust the settings within the application:

  1. Open Kdenlive and go to Settings > Configure Kdenlive (on Linux/Windows) or Kdenlive > Preferences (on macOS).
  2. Select the Project Defaults tab on the left.
  3. Look for the Transcoding options. Here, you can define the default codecs and profiles used when Kdenlive prompts you to transcode files.

While you must still click “OK” on the prompt, this system ensures that your footage is optimized for multi-track editing without lagging or audio-sync issues.

Automatic Proxy Clips

If your goal in transcoding is simply to make high-resolution footage (like 4K) run smoothly on your timeline, Kdenlive offers an automated feature called Proxy Clips.

Proxy clips are low-resolution, lightweight copies of your media that Kdenlive generates automatically in the background when you import files. Kdenlive uses these lightweight files while you edit, but automatically swaps them back to the original high-quality files when you render the final video.

To enable automatic proxy generation:

  1. Go to Project > Project Settings in the top menu.
  2. Click on the Proxy tab.
  3. Check the box to Enable Proxy Clips.
  4. You can check Generate for videos larger than x pixels to ensure that only heavy, high-resolution files are automatically transcoded into proxies upon import.
