Default Wipe Transitions in Kdenlive

This article provides an overview of the default wipe compositions built into the Kdenlive video editor. It explains how these transition effects function, lists the standard wipe patterns available immediately upon installation, and outlines how to apply and customize them in your video projects.

Understanding Kdenlive’s Wipe Composition

In Kdenlive, a “Wipe” is a transition composition that uses grayscale image maps—specifically Portable Graymap (PGM) files—to transition from one video track to another. The transition progresses based on the luminance values of the grayscale image, moving from black (0% opacity) to white (100% opacity). This allows for highly customizable and smooth visual transitions between overlapping clips.

Default Built-in Wipe Patterns

Kdenlive comes pre-packaged with a variety of standard PGM wipe patterns. These are categorized by their visual movement and geometric shapes:

1. Linear and Directional Wipes

These are the most common transitions, moving across the screen in a straight line: * Horizontal Wipe: Slides the transition from left to right or right to left. * Vertical Wipe: Slides the transition from top to bottom or bottom to top. * Diagonal Wipe: Moves across the screen from one corner to the opposite corner (e.g., top-left to bottom-right).

2. Geometric Shape Wipes

These transitions expand or contract using defined geometric shapes: * Circle / Radial: A circular wipe that expands from the center outward (or contracts inward). * Square / Box: An expanding or contracting square shape. * Diamond: A diamond-shaped transition expanding from the center.

3. Complex and Artistic Wipes

Kdenlive also includes more complex grayscale patterns for stylized transitions: * Clock: A radial sweep resembling the hands of a clock moving around a central point. * Double Sweep: Similar to the clock wipe, but with two sweeping arms moving in opposite directions. * Spiral: A spiral pattern that unfurls to reveal the next clip. * Burst: A starburst-style pattern expanding outward. * Matrix / Dissolve Patterns: Various checkered or pixelated noise patterns that create a textured dissolve effect.

How to Access and Customize Default Wipes

To use these built-in wipes in Kdenlive, follow these steps:

  1. Overlap Clips: Place two video clips on adjacent tracks in the timeline, ensuring they overlap for the duration of the desired transition.
  2. Add Wipe: Click the bottom corner of the upper clip, or right-click the overlap area and select Add Composition > Wipe.
  3. Choose the Pattern: In the Properties tab of the Wipe composition, locate the Image file dropdown menu. This menu contains the complete list of built-in PGM wipe assets.
  4. Adjust Settings:
    • Softness: Adjust the slider to feather the edges of the wipe for a smoother transition.
    • Invert: Check this box to reverse the direction of the grayscale transition.
    • Revert: Flips the start and end points of the transition.
