Create Picture in Picture Effect in Kdenlive
Creating a picture-in-picture (PiP) effect in Kdenlive is a straightforward process that allows you to overlay a smaller video on top of a main background video. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step tutorial on how to use the Transform tool in Kdenlive to scale, position, and customize your secondary footage for tutorials, reaction videos, or presentations.
Step 1: Arrange Your Clips on the Timeline
To create a picture-in-picture effect, you need at least two video tracks active in your timeline. 1. Import your media files into the Project Bin. 2. Drag your main background video onto a lower video track (such as V1). 3. Drag the video you want to overlay (the smaller picture-in-picture clip) onto the track directly above it (such as V2). Make sure the two clips overlap on the timeline where you want the effect to appear.
Step 2: Apply the Transform Effect
The easiest way to resize and move your overlay clip is by using the Transform tool. 1. Navigate to the Effects tab (typically located next to your Project Bin, or accessible via View > Effects). 2. Type “Transform” into the effects search bar. 3. Drag and drop the Transform effect directly onto the overlay clip on track V2.
Step 3: Resize and Position the Overlay
Once the Transform effect is applied, you can manipulate the video directly in the preview window. 1. Click on the overlay clip on track V2 to select it. 2. Look at the Project Monitor (the video preview window). You will see a red bounding box with adjustment handles around your overlay video. 3. Click and drag any of the corner handles to scale the video down to your desired size. 4. Click and hold inside the bounding box, then drag the video to your preferred position on the screen, such as the bottom-right or top-left corner.
(Note: You can also adjust the scale and position coordinates precisely by typing numerical values into the Properties panel on the side of your screen.)
Step 4: Add Finishing Touches (Optional)
To make your picture-in-picture window look more polished, you can apply additional quick effects: * Add a Border: Search for the Border effect in the Effects tab, drag it onto your overlay clip, and adjust the color and width in the Properties panel. * Round the Corners: Search for the Alpha Shapes effect, drag it onto the overlay clip, change the shape to “Rectangle,” and adjust the transition width to create clean, rounded corners.
