Create Neon Outline Animation in Kdenlive

Transforming live-action footage into a glowing neon outline animation is a powerful way to add a futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic to your videos. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of using Kdenlive’s “Edge Detect” effect, combined with color grading and blending techniques, to isolate the outlines of your footage and convert them into a vibrant, glowing neon animation.

Step 1: Prepare Your Footage

For the best results, choose a high-contrast video clip with clear subject separation from the background.

  1. Open Kdenlive and import your video clip into the Project Bin.
  2. Drag and drop the clip onto the timeline (Track V2).
  3. Leave the track directly below it (Track V1) empty for now, or place a black color clip there to serve as a clean background.

Step 2: Apply the Edge Detect Effect

The core of this effect relies on isolating the edges of the objects in your video.

  1. Go to the Effects tab and search for Edge Detect.
  2. Drag and drop the effect onto your video clip on Track V2.
  3. In the Properties panel, adjust the parameters. Depending on your version of Kdenlive, you can choose different algorithms (such as Sobel). Adjust the brightness or threshold settings until your subject is represented by sharp white lines on a black background.

Step 3: Colorize the Outlines

By default, the Edge Detect effect produces grayscale lines. To get the neon look, you need to add color.

  1. Search for the Colorize or Tint effect in the Effects panel.
  2. Apply it to the same clip, placing it below the Edge Detect effect in the stack.
  3. Choose a vibrant, saturated neon color, such as cyan, hot pink, or electric green.
  4. Adjust the intensity of the color effect so the white lines take on the chosen hue completely.

Step 4: Create the Neon Glow

A true neon sign has a soft, luminous glow radiating from the sharp inner core. You can simulate this by duplicating your track and adding blur.

  1. Copy the clip from Track V2 and paste it directly onto the track above it (Track V3), ensuring they are perfectly aligned.
  2. Select the top clip (Track V3) and search for the Gaussian Blur effect.
  3. Apply the blur to Track V3 and increase the blur radius (horizontal and vertical) to create a soft, wide glow.
  4. To blend the glowing layer with the sharp outline layer below, select the top clip, go to the Compositing options, and add a Composite and Transform transition between Track V3 and Track V2.
  5. Set the blend mode of this transition to Screen or Addition. This will overlay the blurred glow onto the sharp colored lines, creating a realistic neon light effect.

Step 5: Fine-Tune the Contrast

To make the neon animation pop, you must ensure the background remains completely black.

  1. If the background of your footage is still visible, add the Lift/Gamma/Gain or Levels effect to the original clip on Track V2.
  2. Adjust the “Lift” or “Black point” slider to darken the shadows until all background noise disappears, leaving only the glowing neon outlines animating across the screen.
