Create Animated Lower Thirds in Kdenlive

Creating professional lower-third graphics does not require complex external motion graphics software. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to design, format, and animate a lower-third graphic directly inside Kdenlive’s built-in Title Editor using its native viewport animation features.

Step 1: Open the Title Editor

To begin, open your Kdenlive project. Right-click an empty space in the Project Bin and select Add Title Clip from the context menu. This opens the Kdenlive Title Editor window.

Step 2: Design the Graphic Elements

Before animating, you need to design the static look of your lower third. * Create the Background: Click the Add Rectangle tool (or press Alt + R). Draw a horizontal bar in the lower-left quadrant of the screen. In the properties panel on the right, choose a solid color and lower the opacity (e.g., to 80%) to make it semi-transparent. * Add Primary Text: Click the Add Text tool (or press Alt + T). Click inside your background rectangle and type the name of the speaker. Format the font size, color, and weight (e.g., Bold, White, Size 45) to make it stand out. * Add Secondary Text: Click the text tool again to add a second line for the speaker’s title or description. Format this text to be smaller and lighter (e.g., Regular, Light Gray, Size 30) and position it directly beneath the name.

Step 3: Enable the Animation Settings

In the top-right corner of the Title Editor window, click on the Animation tab. Check the box labeled Edit Start viewport and Edit End viewport. Enabling this option creates two distinct frame boundaries—“Start” and “End”—which Kdenlive uses to calculate the movement of your graphic over time.

Step 4: Configure the Slide-In Animation

To make the lower-third graphic slide smoothly onto the screen from the left: 1. Click the Show Start Frame button. 2. Select all of your designed elements (the background rectangle and both text blocks) by dragging a selection box over them. 3. Move the selected elements horizontally to the left until they are completely outside the yellow viewport border (off-screen). 4. Click the Show End Frame button. 5. Ensure the elements are positioned exactly where you want them to rest on screen during the video. Kdenlive will automatically generate the motion frames to slide the graphic from the start position to the end position.

Step 5: Adjust Duration and Save

In the top-left area of the Title Editor, locate the Duration field. Set this to your desired length (e.g., 00:00:05:00 for 5 seconds). The shorter the duration, the faster the slide-in animation will occur. Once satisfied, click the Create Title button at the bottom right.

Step 6: Add to Timeline and Animate Out

Drag your newly created title clip from the Project Bin onto a video track above your main footage.

To make the graphic slide out or fade away at the end: 1. Select the title clip on the timeline. 2. Hover your mouse over the top-right edge of the clip until the fade indicator appears, then drag it inward to create a smooth fade-out transition. 3. Alternatively, apply the Transform effect to the clip to keyframe a manual slide-out motion at the end of the timeline block.
