Create a Kdenlive Split Screen with Transform Effect

Creating a split-screen layout in Kdenlive is a highly effective way to display multiple video clips simultaneously in a single frame. This article provides a clear, step-by-step guide on how to stack your video tracks and use the Transform effect to scale, position, and align your clips into a clean side-by-side or grid layout.

Step 1: Arrange Your Clips on the Timeline

To create a split screen, you must stack your video clips vertically on different tracks so they play at the same time.

  1. Open Kdenlive and import the video clips you want to use.
  2. Drag your first video clip onto the V2 track.
  3. Drag your second video clip onto the V1 track, aligning it directly beneath the clip on V2. (If you want a triple or quadruple split-screen, continue stacking clips on V3, V4, etc.)

Step 2: Apply the Transform Effect

The Transform effect allows you to resize and reposition your clips.

  1. Go to the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left or top-left panel).
  2. In the search bar, type Transform.
  3. Drag and drop the Transform effect onto the clip in the V2 track.

Step 3: Resize and Position the Top Clip

Once the effect is applied, you can adjust the clip’s size and coordinates to occupy only half of the screen.

  1. Select the clip on V2 to open its properties in the Effect/Composition Stack panel.
  2. In the Project Monitor, you will see a red bounding box around your video. You can drag the corners of this box to resize the clip, or adjust the parameters manually in the effect panel.
  3. For a precise 50/50 vertical split:
    • Change the Size (or Scale) to 50% (if doing a grid) or keep it at 100% and adjust the X coordinate to slide it to one side.
    • To place the clip on the right side of a standard 1920x1080 video, set the X coordinate to 960.
    • To place it on the left side, set the X coordinate to 0 (and use a crop effect if needed).

Step 4: Add the Transform Effect to the Bottom Clip

To ensure both videos are positioned correctly, you should apply the same effect to the bottom track.

  1. Drag the Transform effect onto the clip on the V1 track.
  2. Select the V1 clip.
  3. Adjust the X coordinate to position this video on the opposite side of the screen (e.g., set X to 0 if the top clip is on the right, or -960 if you are shifting the frame).

Step 5: Crop the Clips (Optional)

If your videos overlap or you want to show specific parts of each frame without scaling them down too much:

  1. Search for the Crop, Scale and Tilt or Edge Crop effect in the Effects panel.
  2. Apply it to your clips.
  3. Adjust the Left, Right, Top, or Bottom crop values to cleanly cut the clips down the middle, creating a seamless dividing line between your split-screen videos.
