Color Grading in Kdenlive: Color Balance and Levels

Combining the “Color Balance” and “Levels” effects in Kdenlive provides a powerful, lightweight workflow for professional color grading. While “Levels” allows you to correct the contrast, brightness, and dynamic range of your footage, “Color Balance” gives you precise control over the shadows, midtones, and highlights to establish a stylized creative look. This guide explains how to combine these two essential tools step-by-step to achieve a polished, cinematic grade for your video projects.

Step 1: Set Up the Effects Stack Order

To begin, search for “Levels” and “Color Balance” in Kdenlive’s Effects tab and drag both onto your video clip. The order of these effects in the properties panel is crucial. Always place Levels above Color Balance.

Correcting the exposure, contrast, and white balance must happen before you apply creative color grading. Adjusting colors on an improperly exposed clip will lead to artifacting and unpredictable color shifts.

Step 2: Correct Contrast and Exposure with Levels

Open the Levels effect settings. For the best accuracy, open Kdenlive’s Histogram scope (View > Technical Monitors > Histogram).

  1. Adjust the Black Point (Input Black): Drag the black slider under the histogram input to the right until the leftmost edge of your waveform just touches the bottom of the scale. This deepens your shadows without crushing the details.
  2. Adjust the White Point (Input White): Drag the white slider to the left until the brightest parts of your image sit just below the clipping point at the top of the scale. This ensures your whites are clean and bright.
  3. Adjust the Gamma (Midtones): Shift the middle gray slider to the left to brighten the midtones, or to the right to darken them. Use this to ensure your subject’s face and key details are properly exposed.

Step 3: Grade the Image with Color Balance

With the technical correction complete, use the Color Balance effect to style the shot. This effect divides the image into Lift (shadows), Gamma (midtones), and Gain (highlights).

  1. Shadows (Lift): Use the shadow color wheel to inject color into the darkest parts of the frame. For a classic cinematic look, push the shadows slightly toward teal or blue.
  2. Highlights (Gain): Adjust the highlights to set the tone for light sources and skies. Pushing the highlights toward warm orange, yellow, or gold can simulate natural sunlight or golden hour.
  3. Midtones (Gamma): The midtones contain the majority of your image detail, including skin tones. Adjust this wheel carefully to balance the overall mood of the video while keeping skin tones looking natural.

Step 4: Monitor and Reference

Throughout the grading process, use Kdenlive’s Vectorscope and RGB Parade scopes. The RGB Parade will help you ensure your red, green, and blue channels are balanced, preventing unwanted color casts. The Vectorscope will help you monitor color saturation and ensure your skin tones align with the skin-tone indicator line.

Finally, toggle the power buttons next to the Levels and Color Balance effects in the properties panel to quickly compare your graded footage with the original camera source, ensuring your adjustments have enhanced the shot.
