Blur a Moving Face with Motion Tracking in Kdenlive
This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to blur a moving face in Kdenlive using the software’s built-in motion tracking tools. You will learn how to isolate a moving subject, apply the tracking filter, and automatically apply a blur or pixelation effect that follows the subject across the screen.
Step 1: Add Your Clip to the Timeline
- Open Kdenlive and import your video clip into the Project Bin.
- Drag and drop the video clip onto the timeline.
Step 2: Apply the Auto Mask Effect
Kdenlive features an integrated tool called Auto Mask that combines motion tracking and blurring into a single effect.
- Go to the Effects panel (usually located on the left or bottom-left of the screen).
- In the search bar, type Auto Mask.
- Drag and drop the Auto Mask effect directly onto your video clip in the timeline.
Step 3: Position the Mask Over the Face
- Select the video clip in your timeline to open the Properties (or Effect/Composition Stack) panel.
- In the Project Monitor, you will see a yellow rectangle outlining the mask area.
- Click and drag the corners of this rectangle to resize and position it directly over the face you want to blur.
Step 4: Configure the Blur and Tracking Settings
In the Auto Mask settings within the Effect Stack:
- Mask Type: Choose your preferred obscuring style, such as Pixelate or Blur.
- Width/Height/Moblur: Adjust these sliders to increase or decrease the intensity of the blur so the face is completely unidentifiable.
- Tracking Algorithm: Choose a tracking method. DaSiamRPN or CSRT are highly recommended for accurate tracking of human faces.
Step 5: Analyze and Track the Motion
- Move the timeline playhead to the exact frame where the face first appears or where you want the tracking to begin.
- In the Auto Mask settings, locate the tracking controls (look for the “play” arrow icons next to the tracking options).
- Click the Analyse button (Analyze Forward) to start the tracking process.
- Kdenlive will play through the clip, frame by frame, automatically moving the blur box to follow the face.
Step 6: Fine-Tune the Tracking (Optional)
If the face moves too quickly or rotates, the tracker may occasionally lose its target.
- If the mask drifts off the face, pause the analysis.
- Manually drag the yellow mask box back over the face at the frame where it went off course.
- Click the Analyse button again to resume tracking from that point forward.
