Animate Picture-in-Picture in Kdenlive

Creating a dynamic picture-in-picture (PiP) effect in Kdenlive is a great way to display multiple video tracks simultaneously. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the versatile “Composite and Transform” transition to position, scale, and animate a secondary video overlaying your main footage.

Step 1: Arrange Your Clips on the Timeline

To create a picture-in-picture effect, you need at least two video tracks: 1. Place your main background video on a lower track (for example, V1). 2. Place the video you want to use as the picture-in-picture overlay on the track directly above it (for example, V2). 3. Align the clips so they overlap during the time you want the PiP effect to appear.

Step 2: Add the Composite and Transform Transition

  1. Hover your mouse over the bottom-left corner of the upper clip on V2 until the cursor changes to a pointing hand.
  2. Click to automatically add a transition. By default, Kdenlive often applies “Wipe” or “Mix.”
  3. Select the transition block that was just created between the tracks.
  4. Go to the Properties panel (usually located in the top-right area of the interface) and change the transition type to Composite and Transform using the dropdown menu.
  5. Drag the right edge of the transition block on the timeline so that it spans the entire duration of the upper clip.

Step 3: Resize and Position the PiP Video

  1. Click on the Composite and Transform transition block in the timeline to select it.
  2. Look at the Project Monitor; you will see a red bounding box around your upper video.
  3. Click and drag the corners of this bounding box to scale the video down to your desired PiP size (e.g., 25% of the original size).
  4. Click inside the bounding box and drag the scaled video to your preferred location on the screen, such as the top-right corner.

Step 4: Animate the Picture-in-Picture Layout

To make the PiP clip move, slide, or fade in, you must use keyframes within the transition’s properties: 1. Select the transition block to display its timeline in the Properties panel. 2. The first keyframe is automatically created at the very beginning (00:00). Set your starting position here (for example, you can drag the clip entirely off-screen if you want it to slide in). 3. Move the playhead in the transition’s timeline forward by a few frames or seconds to where you want the animation to end. 4. Double-click on the transition timeline or click the Add Keyframe (plus icon) button to create a second keyframe. 5. With the second keyframe selected, drag the video overlay in the Project Monitor to its final destination on the screen. 6. Kdenlive will automatically animate the smooth transition between the first and second keyframes. You can choose the interpolation method (e.g., Linear or Smooth) by right-clicking the keyframe to adjust the acceleration of the movement.
