Animate Cinematic Widescreen Bars in Kdenlive

This guide teaches you how to animate cinematic widescreen bars—often called the letterbox effect—closing in on your video using Kdenlive. By applying the “Edge Crop” effect and utilizing keyframes, you can smoothly transition your footage from a standard 16:9 aspect ratio to a cinematic widescreen format.

Step 1: Add the Edge Crop Effect

  1. Open Kdenlive and import your video clip onto the timeline.
  2. Go to the Effects tab (usually located in the bottom-left or top-left panel).
  3. Search for the Edge Crop effect.
  4. Drag and drop the Edge Crop effect directly onto your video clip in the timeline.

Step 2: Enable Keyframes

  1. Select the video clip on your timeline to open its properties in the Effect/Composition Stack panel.
  2. Locate the Top and Bottom parameters inside the Edge Crop effect options.
  3. Click the clock icon (Toggle Show/Hide Keyframes) next to both the Top and Bottom sliders. This action enables keyframing, allowing you to animate the values over time.

Step 3: Set the Initial Frame (Open Screen)

  1. Move your timeline playhead to the exact frame where you want the widescreen bars to start closing in.
  2. In the effect keyframe timeline, double-click to add a keyframe for both Top and Bottom at this playhead position (if one is not already automatically created).
  3. Ensure both the Top and Bottom crop values are set to 0. This represents the standard, uncropped view.

Step 4: Set the Final Frame (Cinematic Widescreen)

  1. Move the playhead forward in time to the point where the widescreen bars should be fully closed.
  2. Add a second keyframe at this new playhead position.
  3. Change the value of both the Top and Bottom parameters. To achieve a standard cinematic 2.39:1 widescreen look from a 16:9 video, set both values to 12% (or customize this number to your preference).

Step 5: Smooth the Transition (Optional)

By default, Kdenlive uses linear interpolation, which makes the movement start and stop abruptly. For a smoother, more professional cinematic slide: 1. Right-click on the keyframe markers in the effect stack. 2. Change the keyframe interpolation type from Linear to Smooth (or Discrete if you want an instant jump).

Preview your timeline to watch the black bars smoothly slide in from the top and bottom of the frame.
