ISO/IEC Working Group for the JPEG Standard

The working group officially responsible for the JPEG standard within ISO/IEC JTC 1 is ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1, formally titled "Coding of still pictures."
To understand this designation, it helps to examine the hierarchy within the standard-setting framework:
- ISO/IEC JTC 1: Joint Technical Committee 1 is a collaborative effort between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) tasked with developing worldwide standards in Information Technology.
- SC 29: Subcommittee 29 operates under JTC 1 and handles the "Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information." SC 29 oversees several working groups responsible for global media standards, including MPEG and JPEG.
- WG 1: Working Group 1 operates directly under SC 29 and is specifically charged with the coding and standardization of digital still images.
While ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1 is its formal bureaucratic title, the committee is colloquially known as the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). The term "Joint" reflects the group's ongoing collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), specifically ITU-T Study Group 16.
