The Dawn of PicturePress
In October 1990, a Silicon Valley startup named Storm Technology released PicturePress. Developed specifically for Apple Macintosh computers, PicturePress was designed to compress and decompress 24-bit color photographic images. At the time, uncompressed high-resolution color images consumed vast amounts of memory and storage, often overwhelming standard hard drives of the era.
PicturePress implemented the emerging baseline standard developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), a joint committee formed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT). Although the formal international standard (ISO/IEC 10918-1 / ITU-T T.81) was not fully ratified until 1992, PicturePress utilized the group’s draft Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) lossy compression algorithms, making it the pioneer in commercial JPEG implementation.
Features and Integration
PicturePress was distributed as both a standalone software application and an external plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. Because 1990-era microprocessors struggled with the mathematically intensive calculations required by the JPEG Discrete Cosine Transform, PicturePress featured two modes of operation:
- Pure Software Decoding: Users could decode and view JPEG files directly on their standard Macintosh systems, though processing larger images could take several seconds to minutes depending on the CPU.
- Hardware-Accelerated Decoding: Storm Technology simultaneously sold the "PicturePress Accelerator," a NuBus expansion board featuring a dedicated AT&T WE DSP32C digital signal processor to offload decoding and encoding calculations from the host processor.
Historical Context and Successors
Prior to PicturePress, digital image decoding was restricted to proprietary, non-standard compression formats or academic and laboratory tools. Storm Technology demonstrated that standardized, transform-based compression could be sold as a commercially viable consumer and desktop publishing tool.
Following PicturePress's introduction, mainstream adoption accelerated. In December 1991, Apple released QuickTime 1.0, which integrated native JPEG decompression into the operating system architecture. By 1993, mainstream graphics software—such as Adobe Photoshop 2.5—and early web browsers began incorporating native JPEG software decoders directly into their core codebases, establishing JPEG as the dominant photographic format of the digital era.
