How to Ungroup Objects in Inkscape
This article provides a quick overview and step-by-step guide on how to separate previously grouped objects in Inkscape. Whether you are working with a complex vector illustration or a simple layout, learning how to ungroup elements allows you to modify, style, or move individual shapes independently. Below, you will find the standard methods using keyboard shortcuts, the main menu, and the context menu to quickly undo object grouping.
Method 1: Using the Keyboard Shortcut
The fastest way to ungroup objects in Inkscape is by using a hotkey.
- Select the grouped object by clicking on it.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + G on Windows/Linux, or Cmd + Shift + G on a Mac.
- The single bounding box will split into multiple dashed boxes, indicating the objects are now separate.
Method 2: Using the Application Menu
If you prefer navigating through the top menus, Inkscape provides a direct command in the Object menu.
- Click on the grouped elements to select them.
- Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Object.
- Scroll down and select Ungroup from the dropdown list.
Method 3: Using the Right-Click Context Menu
You can also access the ungroup command directly from your workspace canvas.
- Right-click on the grouped object you wish to separate.
- Select Ungroup from the context menu that appears.
Handling Deeply Nested Groups
Sometimes, objects are grouped inside other groups (nested groups). If you use the ungroup command once and the objects are still tied together, it means there is another layer of grouping. You can repeatedly press Ctrl + Shift + G (or Cmd + Shift + G) until all individual paths are completely separated. Alternatively, you can double-click on a group to enter it and edit individual shapes without ungrouping the entire set.
