How to Release a Clip in Inkscape
This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to undo or release a clipping path previously applied to an object or image in Inkscape. You will learn the standard menu commands, keyboard shortcuts, and how to manage the remaining vector paths after the clip is removed.
Releasing a Applied Clip
When you apply a clip in Inkscape, the software hides the parts of an image or object that fall outside of a specific vector shape. If you need to revert this action and restore the original, uncropped object, you can release the clip using the following steps:
- Select the object: Use the Select Tool (S) to click on the clipped object or group on your canvas.
- Access the Object menu: Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Object.
- Release the clip: Scroll down to Clip in the dropdown menu, and then select Release from the sub-menu.
Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut to speed up your workflow. After selecting the clipped object, press Alt + D on Windows/Linux or Option + D on a Mac.
What Happens After Releasing a Clip?
Once the clip is released, Inkscape separates the original object from the path that was being used as the clipping mask.
- The original object or image will return to its full, uncropped size.
- The vector path used to create the clip will reappear directly on top of the object as a separate, selectable shape.
- This reappeared path will often lose its original stroke and fill settings, appearing as a transparent or wireframe shape. You can safely delete this path if you no longer need it, or modify it to apply a new clip.
