How to Outset or Expand a Path in Inkscape?

Expanding the outer boundaries of a vector object is a fundamental technique for creating offsets, thick borders, and stickers in vector design. In Inkscape, this process is known as Outsetting, which scales a path outward perpendicularly to its outline rather than just stretching it. This article covers the step-by-step methods to apply a global outset to your paths, adjust the default expansion distance, and use dynamic offsets for real-time visual control.

Method 1: Using the Global Outset Command

The quickest way to expand a path uniformly is by using Inkscape’s built-in path modification commands.

  1. Select the Select and Transform Objects tool (the black arrow) or press S.
  2. Click on the path you want to expand.
  3. Navigate to the top menu and select Path > Outset, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + ) (on some keyboards, Ctrl + Shift + 0).
  4. Repeat the command or shortcut multiple times until you achieve the desired thickness.

Note: If you want to shrink a path inward instead, you can use the Inset command by navigating to Path > Inset or pressing Ctrl + (.

Method 2: Adjusting the Global Outset Distance

By default, Inkscape expands the path by a small, set increment ($2.00$) each time you trigger the shortcut. If you need to expand your paths by a specific, larger distance globally, you can change this behavior in your preferences.

  1. Open the Preferences window by going to Edit > Preferences (or press Ctrl + Shift + P).
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on the arrow next to Behavior to expand the menu, then select Steps.
  3. Look for the field labeled Inset/Outset by:.
  4. Change the numerical value and the unit drop-down (e.g., Change to 5.00 px or 1.00 mm) to match your project requirements.
  5. Close the Preferences window. Now, every time you use the Outset command, the path will expand by your newly defined global step distance.

Method 3: Using Dynamic Offset for Precise Visual Control

If you prefer to expand your path manually using a visual slider rather than rigid keyboard steps, the Dynamic Offset feature is the ideal alternative.

  1. Select your vector path.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Path > Dynamic Offset (or press Ctrl + J).
  3. Your object will switch to a specialized editing mode, and a single small square handle will appear at the top of the path outline.
  4. Click and drag this handle outward to expand the path globally, or inward to compress it. This method provides smooth, real-time scaling without altering the core node structure of your original shape.
