How to Install Inkscape Extensions?

Installing third-party extensions in Inkscape allows you to add powerful new features, automate repetitive tasks, and expand the software’s design capabilities. This quick guide covers how to locate your Inkscape extensions folder, download compatible files, and successfully install them on Windows, macOS, or Linux. By following a few simple steps, you can safely integrate community-made tools directly into your Inkscape workspace.

Step 1: Find Your Inkscape Extensions Directory

Inkscape looks for custom tools in a specific user directory. Instead of hunting through your computer’s file system, you can find the exact folder path directly through the software.

  1. Open Inkscape.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Edit (Windows/Linux) or Inkscape (macOS), then click Preferences.
  3. In the Preferences window, click on System in the left-hand sidebar.
  4. Look for the entry labeled User extensions.
  5. Click the Open button next to the file path. This will open the correct folder on your desktop.

Step 2: Download and Extract the Extension

Most third-party Inkscape extensions are shared by creators on platforms like the official Inkscape Extension Library or GitHub. They usually download as a compressed ZIP archive.

  1. Download the extension files from a trusted source.
  2. Locate the downloaded .zip file on your computer and extract (unzip) its contents.
  3. Inside the extracted folder, look for the core extension files. An Inkscape extension always requires at least two specific files with the same name but different extensions:

Step 3: Copy Files to the Extensions Folder

To install the tool, you need to paste the raw files directly into the directory you opened in Step 1.

  1. Select the .inx and .py files (along with any other accompanying folders or files included in the download).
  2. Copy them and paste them directly into the User extensions folder.
  3. Make sure you paste the files themselves, not the parent folder they were zipped in, as Inkscape cannot read files nested inside extra subfolders.

Step 4: Restart Inkscape and Use the Tool

Inkscape only scans for new files when it boots up, so you must restart the program to apply the changes.

  1. Close all open windows of Inkscape.
  2. Relaunch the application.
  3. Navigate to the Extensions menu at the top of the screen. Your new third-party tool will appear in this dropdown menu, usually categorized under a specific sub-menu defined by the extension creator.
