How to Group Objects in Inkscape?
Grouping multiple objects in Inkscape is a fundamental skill that allows you to combine separate shapes, paths, or text into a single unit, making it easier to move, scale, and edit them simultaneously without losing their relative positioning. This quick guide covers the primary keyboard shortcuts, menu options, and selection techniques needed to manage grouped elements efficiently. You will also learn how to ungroup items and edit individual pieces within a group without breaking the structure apart.
Selecting Your Objects
Before you can group anything, you must select the items you want to bundle together. Switch to the Select and Transform Objects tool (S or F1) and use one of the following methods:
- Click and Drag: Click on an empty area of the canvas and drag a bounding box completely around the objects you want to select.
- Shift-Click: Hold down the
Shiftkey and click on each individual object one by one. This is ideal when objects are scattered or surrounded by other elements you want to avoid.
Creating the Group
Once your desired objects are highlighted with selection boxes, you can group them using any of these three methods:
- Keyboard Shortcut: Press
Ctrl + G(Windows/Linux) orCmd + G(Mac). This is the fastest and most common method. - The App Menu: Go to the top menu bar, click on Object, and select Group from the dropdown menu.
- Right-Click Context Menu: Right-click on any of the selected objects and choose Group from the pop-up menu.
After grouping, the individual selection boxes will disappear, replaced by a single bounding box around the entire collection.
Editing Inside a Group
If you need to change a single element within a group, you do not have to undo your work. Inkscape allows you to enter a group or select specific items directly:
- Double-Click to Enter: Double-click on any object within the group. The rest of the canvas will slightly fade, indicating you are now “inside” the group. You can move or edit individual shapes freely. To exit, double-click on an empty space on the canvas.
- Ctrl-Click Selection: Hold
Ctrl(orCmdon Mac) and click a specific object within a group to select and modify it instantly without entering the group environment.
How to Ungroup Objects
If you decide you no longer want the objects bundled together, you can separate them just as easily:
- Select the group you want to break apart.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + G(Windows/Linux) orCmd + Shift + G(Mac). - Alternatively, go to Object > Ungroup or right-click the group and select Ungroup.
