How to Export Selection as PNG in Inkscape?
Exporting a specific selection as a PNG file in Inkscape is a straightforward process that allows you to isolate and save individual objects or groups without exporting the entire canvas. By utilizing the dedicated Export dialog, you can ensure that only your highlighted items are rendered with transparent backgrounds and precise dimensions. This guide covers the step-by-step instructions for extracting your selected artwork quickly and efficiently.
Step 1: Select Your Object
Open your project in Inkscape and use the Select and
Transform Objects tool (the black arrow or shortcut
S). Click on the specific object, path, or group of items
that you want to export. You will see a bounding box with arrows appear
around your selection, indicating it is active.
Step 2: Open the Export Dialog
Navigate to the top menu and select File > Export
(or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + E on
Windows/Linux, Cmd + Shift + E on Mac). This action opens
the Export panel, which typically appears on the right
side of your workspace.
Step 3: Choose the Selection Tab
At the top of the Export panel, you will see several tabs to define the export area: Document, Page, Selection, and Custom. Click on the Selection tab. This tells Inkscape to ignore the rest of the canvas and focus exclusively on the items you highlighted in Step 1.
Step 4: Configure Image Settings
Before saving, you can adjust the following settings within the Export panel to match your project needs:
- Suffix/Format: Ensure the output format dropdown is set to PNG.
- DPI and Resolution: Adjust the Dots Per Inch (DPI) if you need a higher-resolution image. The standard web resolution is 96 DPI, while print typically requires 300 DPI. Changing the DPI will automatically scale the width and height pixel dimensions.
Step 5: Choose Destination and Export
Look at the bottom of the Export panel for the file path section. Click the Folder icon next to the file name field to choose where you want to save the PNG on your computer and to give the file a specific name. Once the destination is set, click the Export button at the very bottom of the panel to finalize and save your PNG file.
