How to Equal Spacing Objects in Inkscape?
Distributing multiple objects so they have equal spacing in Inkscape is a straightforward process managed through the Align and Distribute panel. By selecting your objects and choosing the appropriate horizontal or vertical distribution options, you can instantly create perfectly even gaps between your design elements. This article will guide you step-by-step through opening the necessary tools, applying the correct distribution settings, and troubleshooting common spacing issues.
Step 1: Open the Align and Distribute Panel
Before you can space your objects, you need to open the dedicated alignment toolkit in Inkscape.
- Navigate to the top menu and click on Object.
- Select Align and Distribute… from the dropdown menu.
- Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl + A (Windows/Linux) or Shift + Cmd + A (Mac).
A new panel will appear on the right side of your workspace.
Step 2: Select Your Objects
Inkscape needs to know which elements you want to space out.
- Click on the Select and Transform Objects tool (the black arrow icon at the top of the left toolbar).
- Click and drag a bounding box around all the objects you want to distribute, or hold down the Shift key and click each object individually.
Step 3: Choose the Distribution Method
Look at the Distribute section inside the Align and Distribute panel. You will see a row of icons representing different ways to space your items. The choice depends on the orientation of your objects.
Horizontal Spacing (Left to Right)
If your objects are lined up side-by-side and you want even gaps between them:
- Find the icon labeled Distribute horizontally with even horizontal gaps between objects.
- Click this icon to make the spaces between the edges of each object perfectly equal.
Vertical Spacing (Top to Bottom)
If your objects are stacked in a column and you want even gaps between them:
- Find the icon labeled Distribute vertically with even vertical gaps between objects.
- Click this icon to equalize the space between the top and bottom edges of your objects.
Tips for Better Results
To get the exact layout you want, keep these two factors in mind:
- The Anchor Objects: Inkscape will keep the two outermost objects (the far left and far right, or the top and bottom) exactly where they are. It will only shift the objects between them to create the equal spacing. Move your outer objects further apart or closer together first to define the total span of your distribution.
- Aligning the Center: Distribution only fixes the gaps between objects. If your shapes are unevenly raised or lowered, click the Center on horizontal axis or Center on vertical axis buttons in the “Align” section of the same panel to line them up perfectly straight.
