How to Create a Text Object in Inkscape?

This article provides a straightforward guide on how to create, edit, and manipulate text objects in Inkscape, a powerful open-source vector graphics editor. You will learn how to use the Text tool to generate both single-line regular text and multi-line flowing text. Additionally, we will cover how to modify fonts, adjust text sizes, and align your text to paths or shapes, giving you complete control over typography in your design projects.

Step 1: Access the Text Tool

To begin adding text to your canvas, you need to activate Inkscape’s dedicated typography tool.

Step 2: Choose Your Text Object Type

Inkscape offers two primary types of text objects depending on how you intend to use them. Choose the method that best fits your design needs:

Regular (Click-and-Type) Text

This method is ideal for short phrases, titles, or single-line labels.

  1. Click once anywhere on the canvas. A blinking cursor will appear.
  2. Start typing your text.
  3. This text box will expand horizontally indefinitely unless you manually press Enter to start a new line.

Flowed (Click-and-Drag) Text

This method is best for paragraphs, columns, or larger blocks of copy that require automatic line wrapping.

  1. Click and hold your left mouse button on the canvas.
  2. Drag the mouse to draw a bounding box of your desired width and height, then release the button.
  3. Start typing. The text will automatically wrap to the next line when it reaches the right boundary of the box.

Step 3: Edit and Format Your Text

Once your text object is created, you can customize its visual appearance using the Tool Control Bar located at the top of the workspace.

To change the color of your text, ensure the text object is selected and simply click any color swatch on the palette bar at the very bottom of the Inkscape window.

Step 4: Finalize and Transform

After typing your text, switch back to the Select tool (the black arrow icon at the top of the left toolbar, or press S) to move, scale, or rotate your text object just like any other vector shape.

If you ever need to go back and fix a typo or change the wording, simply double-click the text object with the Select tool, and Inkscape will automatically switch back to the Text tool so you can make your edits.
