How to Bring Objects Forward in Inkscape
Changing the stacking order of objects in Inkscape allows you to control which elements appear on top of others, a crucial skill for managing complex vector designs. This article provides a quick overview of the z-order controls in Inkscape, explaining how to use keyboard shortcuts, the selector tool controls, and the Layers and Objects dialog to raise or lower elements. Whether you need to move a shape up by a single level or send it straight to the top of your canvas, these standard methods will help you organize your artwork efficiently.
Using Keyboard Shortcuts for Z-Order
Keyboard shortcuts are the fastest way to manipulate the stacking order (also known as the z-order) of your selected objects.
- Bring to Front (
Home): Moves the selected object all the way to the top of its current layer. - Raise (
Page Up): Moves the selected object up by exactly one level in the stacking order. - Lower (
Page Down): Moves the selected object down by exactly one level in the stacking order. - Send to Back (
End): Moves the selected object all the way to the bottom of its current layer.
Using the Tool Controls Bar
If you prefer using a mouse, Inkscape provides dedicated buttons in the Selector Tool controls bar at the top of the screen. When you select an object, look for the four overlapping geometry icons on the toolbar:
- Icon with an arrow pointing to a top line: Brings the object to the absolute front.
- Icon with an arrow pointing up one step: Raises the object by one level.
- Icon with an arrow pointing down one step: Lowers the object by one level.
- Icon with an arrow pointing to a bottom line: Sends the object to the absolute back.
Managing Order via the Layers and Objects Dialog
For highly detailed projects with numerous overlapping elements, the Layers and Objects dialog offers the most visual control.
- Open the panel by navigating to Layer > Layers and Objects… in the top menu.
- Locate your object within the list; the items at the top of the list are at the front of the canvas, while items at the bottom are at the back.
- Click and drag the object name up or down within the list to precisely place it in the desired stacking order.
