How to Align to Last Selected in Inkscape
This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to align multiple objects relative to the last selected item in Inkscape. You will learn how to locate the Align and Distribute menu, configure the “Relative to” setting, and execute the alignment. This is an essential workflow for precision vector editing, ensuring your design elements line up exactly where you want them based on a specific anchor object.
Step-by-Step Alignment Guide
Inkscape offers powerful alignment tools, but its default settings might not always match your workflow. To align objects based on the object you selected last, follow these steps:
1. Open the Align and Distribute Menu
First, you need to open the correct settings panel. You can do this in three ways:
- Click on the Align and Distribute icon in the right-hand toolbar (it looks like a set of vertical bars).
- Go to the top menu and select Object > Align and Distribute.
- Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + A (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Shift + A (Mac).
2. Change the “Relative to” Setting
Once the Align and Distribute panel opens on the right side of your screen:
- Look for the dropdown menu labeled Relative to: at the very top of the panel.
- Click the dropdown and select Last selected.
3. Select Your Objects
The order in which you select your shapes is crucial for this method to work:
- Click on the first object you want to move.
- Hold down the Shift key.
- Click on any additional objects you want to align.
- Finally, click on the target object—the one you want to remain stationary while the others move around it. This is your anchor.
4. Apply the Alignment
With everything selected and your anchor chosen last, click any of the alignment buttons in the panel. For example, clicking Center on vertical axis or Align left edges will instantly snap all previously selected objects into alignment with that final object.
