How to Add a Node to a Path in Inkscape?
Adding a new node to an existing path in Inkscape allows you to create more complex shapes and precisely control your vector artwork. This process is essential for modifying lines, curves, and shapes after they have been drawn. By utilizing the Node Tool, you can quickly insert a node exactly where you need it, whether you prefer double-clicking directly on the path, using a dedicated control bar button, or utilizing keyboard shortcuts.
Step-by-Step Guide to Inserting Nodes
To add a node to your path, follow these straightforward steps:
- Select the Path: Use the Select
Tool (shortcut
SorF1) to click on the object you want to modify. If it is a predefined shape like a rectangle or circle, you must first convert it to a path by going to the top menu and selecting Path > Object to Path. - Switch to the Node Tool: Click on the Edit
paths by nodes tool from the left toolbar, or simply press
Non your keyboard. Your mouse cursor will change, and the existing nodes on your path will become visible as small squares or diamonds. - Add the New Node: There are two main ways to insert the node:
- The Double-Click Method: Hover your cursor over the exact spot on the path where you want the new node to appear and double-click. A new node will instantly be created at that position.
- The Control Bar Method: Click once on the path segment where you want the node to go to highlight that segment. Then, look at the tool control bar at the top of the screen and click the Insert new nodes into selected segments button (which looks like a plus sign over a node). This will place a new node precisely in the middle of the selected segment.
Refining Your New Node
Once your new node is created, you can immediately begin shaping your vector.
Click and drag the new node to move it and alter the path’s shape.
You can also change the node type depending on the kind of curve you
need. With the node selected, look at the top control bar to change it
into a cusp/corner node for sharp angles, a
smooth node for flowing curves, or a symmetric
node for perfectly balanced handles on either side. If you ever
need to remove the node you just created, simply click it and press
Delete or Backspace on your keyboard, and
Inkscape will remove the point while attempting to preserve the original
shape of the line.
