Use Camera Raw as a Smart Filter in Photoshop

Applying the Camera Raw filter as a Smart Filter allows you to leverage Adobe Camera Raw's robust color, tone, and detail correction tools without permanently altering the original pixels of your image. By converting your layer into a Smart Object first, Photoshop treats any subsequent filter non-destructively, giving you the freedom to re-adjust settings, apply selective masks, and change blending modes at any point in your editing workflow.

1. Convert Your Layer to a Smart Object

Before opening the Camera Raw interface, you must ensure the target layer is set up for non-destructive processing.

  1. Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.
  2. In the Layers panel, select the layer you wish to edit.
  3. Right-click the layer and choose Convert to Smart Object (alternatively, go to the top menu and select Filter > Convert for Smart Filters).

A small icon will appear in the bottom-right corner of the layer thumbnail, confirming it is now a Smart Object.

2. Apply the Camera Raw Filter

With the Smart Object selected, you can now launch the Camera Raw workspace:

  1. Go to the top menu and select Filter > Camera Raw Filter... or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + A (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + A (macOS).
  2. The Camera Raw dialogue will open. Adjust your settings—such as Exposure, Contrast, Color Grading, and Optics—just as you would with a raw file.
  3. Once satisfied with your edits, click OK to apply the changes.

3. Re-edit Your Adjustments at Any Time

Because the filter was applied to a Smart Object, it appears directly beneath the layer as a "Smart Filter."

  • To modify any setting, double-click Camera Raw Filter in the Layers panel.
  • The Camera Raw interface will reopen with all your previous sliders intact, allowing you to fine-tune or reset values without degrading image quality.

4. Mask and Blend the Effect

Every Smart Filter includes a dedicated Smart Filter mask and blending options:

  • Selective Masking: Click the white rectangle labeled Smart Filters thumbnail in the Layers panel. Paint with a black brush on the canvas to hide the Camera Raw adjustments from specific areas of the image, or paint with white to reveal them.
  • Opacity and Blend Modes: Double-click the Edit Blending Options icon (the two sliders) located to the far right of the Camera Raw Filter line. This allows you to lower the opacity of the overall adjustment or change its blend mode (such as Luminosity or Soft Light) without reopening the filter workspace.
