Trigger Actions on File Open with Scripts Event Manager
Automating repetitive tasks in image editing software like Adobe Photoshop saves significant production time. The Scripts Event Manager allows you to bind specific scripts or recorded Actions to core application events, such as opening a document. This guide explains how to configure the Scripts Event Manager to automatically trigger an Action the moment an image file is opened.
1. Prepare Your Action
Before configuring the event trigger, ensure the Action you want to execute already exists and works without errors.
- Open the Actions panel (Window > Actions).
- Record or locate the Action you want to automate (for example, applying a specific color profile, creating standard layers, or resizing).
- Test the Action manually on an open document to confirm it executes without prompting for unnecessary user input.
2. Open the Script Events Manager
- Navigate to the top menu and select File > Scripts > Script Events Manager...
- In the dialog box that appears, check the box labeled Enable Events to Run Scripts/Actions. This activates background event monitoring within the application.
3. Set the Event Trigger
- Locate the Photoshop Event dropdown menu.
- Select Open Document from the list. This tells the application to listen specifically for the file-open command.
4. Assign the Action
- Below the event selection, find the options for what to execute. Select the Action radio button (instead of Script).
- Use the first dropdown menu to select the Action Set that contains your target Action.
- Use the second dropdown menu to select the specific Action you want to run automatically.
5. Register the Event
- Click the Add button located on the right side of the dialog box.
- Verify that your new event-action pair appears in the active list at
the top of the window (it will display as
Open Document -> [Your Action]). - Click Done to save the changes and close the dialog box.
6. Test and Manage the Automation
To test the setup, open any image file via File > Open or by dragging it into the workspace. The assigned Action will execute immediately once the document loads.
To disable or remove this automation later:
- Return to File > Scripts > Script Events Manager...
- Select the event from the list at the top.
- Click Remove to delete the pairing, or uncheck Enable Events to Run Scripts/Actions to disable all automated triggers globally.
- Click Done.
