How to Save and Load Selections in Photoshop

Saving a complex selection allows you to preserve intricate cutouts, hair masks, and detailed object borders without having to recreate them from scratch. This guide explains how to store active selections as alpha channels in your image editing workflow, how to reload or modify them later, and which file formats you need to use so your saved selections remain intact across multiple editing sessions.

Step 1: Save the Active Selection

Once you have created your detailed selection using tools like the Pen Tool, Quick Selection, or Select and Mask:

  1. Go to the top menu and click Select > Save Selection.
  2. In the dialog box, set the Destination Document to your current working file.
  3. Leave the Channel dropdown set to New.
  4. Enter a descriptive name for your selection in the Name field (e.g., "Subject Outline" or "Background Mask").
  5. Click OK.

Your selection is now converted into an alpha channel and stored inside the file. You can safely press Ctrl + D (Windows) or Cmd + D (macOS) to deselect your artwork and continue editing.

Step 2: Reload the Selection

When you need to reuse the saved selection later in your session:

  • Using the Menu: Go to Select > Load Selection, choose your named channel from the Channel dropdown menu, and click OK.
  • Using the Channels Panel: Open the Channels panel (Window > Channels). Locate your saved channel at the bottom of the list. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) and click directly on the channel thumbnail to instantly convert it into an active selection.

Step 3: Modify an Existing Selection

You can combine new selections with your previously saved alpha channel using standard boolean operations:

  1. Create a new selection on your canvas.
  2. Go to Select > Save Selection.
  3. In the Channel dropdown, select your existing channel name instead of "New".
  4. Choose an operation under the Operation section:
    • Add to Selection: Expands the saved mask.
    • Subtract from Selection: Cuts the active shape out of the saved mask.
    • Intersect with Selection: Keeps only the overlapping areas.
  5. Click OK to update the channel.

Step 4: Preserve Selections for Future Sessions

Saved selections are discarded if you export your project as a flattened format such as JPEG or PNG. To preserve your alpha channels for future editing sessions:

  • Save your master file as a PSD (Photoshop Document) or TIFF.
  • Ensure the Alpha Channels checkbox is enabled in the "Save As" dialogue box before confirming.
