How to Link Layers Without Grouping

Linking layers allows you to move, transform, and align multiple elements across your canvas simultaneously while keeping them organized in their existing layer hierarchy. Unlike grouping, which forces layers into a single folder structure, linking establishes a functional relationship between separate layers regardless of where they sit in your layer stack. This guide explains how to link and unlink layers quickly using standard image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.

Why Use Linked Layers Instead of Groups?

Grouping layers is ideal for organizing your workspace into tidy folders, but it permanently alters your layer order. Linking layers connects elements dynamically. You can leave background assets, adjustment layers, or text elements in completely different sections of your layer stack while ensuring that moving one automatically moves the others.

  1. Open the Layers Panel: Ensure your Layers panel is visible (press F7 in Photoshop if it is hidden).
  2. Select the Desired Layers: Hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and click each layer you want to connect. To select a continuous range, click the first layer, hold Shift, and click the last layer.
  3. Click the Link Icon: Look at the bottom of the Layers panel and click the Link Layers icon, which resembles a small chain link. Alternatively, you can right-click any of the selected layers and choose Link Layers from the context menu.

Once linked, a small chain icon will appear on the right side of each connected layer.

Moving and Transforming Linked Elements

With the layers linked, select the Move Tool (V). You only need to select and drag a single layer from the linked set; all associated layers will move in unison. This simultaneous behavior also applies to free transformations (Ctrl + T or Command + T), allowing you to scale or rotate the entire linked set together.

To remove the link between layers:

  • Unlink specific layers: Select the layer you want to disconnect, right-click it, and select Unlink Layers.
  • Unlink the entire set: Select all currently linked layers and click the chain icon at the bottom of the panel to disable the link across the entire selection.
  • Temporary bypass: In most editors, holding Shift while dragging a single linked layer will temporarily move only that layer without breaking the established link.
