How to Create Columns Using Guide Layout

Modern image editing software features automated guide layout tools that eliminate the tedious math and manual dragging traditionally required to build multi-column grids. This article explains how to access the new guide layout feature, configure column numbers, widths, and gutters, and apply custom margins. By utilizing these automated settings, designers can quickly establish consistent, mathematically precise column frameworks for web templates, print collaterals, and multi-panel graphics.

Accessing the Guide Layout Feature

To open the automated layout tool, navigate to the top menu of your image editor and select View > Guides > New Guide Layout (or View > New Guide Layout, depending on your specific software version). This command opens a dedicated dialog box designed to generate complex guide systems across your active canvas or artboard instantly.

Configuring Columns Step-by-Step

Once the dialog box is open, ensure the Preview checkbox is enabled so you can monitor your adjustments in real time:

  1. Clear Existing Guides: Check the Clear Existing Guides box at the bottom of the dialog. This removes any rogue rulers currently on the canvas, ensuring a clean slate.
  2. Enable the Columns Option: In the main panel, check the box labeled Columns. Disable the Rows option unless you also require a modular or baseline grid.
  3. Set the Column Count: In the Number field, enter the desired number of columns (for instance, a standard 12-column web grid or a 3-column brochure layout).
  4. Define the Gutter: Enter a value in the Gutter field to set the spacing between each column (e.g., 20 px or 0.25 in). If you leave the Width field empty, the software will automatically calculate equal widths for all columns to fill the available space evenly.
  5. Set a Fixed Width (Optional): If your project requires rigid dimensions, define a specific value in the Width field. The software will center or align the columns based on your margin parameters.

Setting Canvas Margins

Columns require boundary constraints to prevent content from touching the canvas edges:

  1. Check the Margin option in the lower section of the dialog box.
  2. Enter values for Top, Left, Bottom, and Right margins.
  3. When margins are applied, the tool automatically recalculates the dynamic column widths within the defined inner boundary rather than using the full width of the document.

Saving and Reusing Layout Presets

If you work with standard formats—such as 12-column bootstrap frameworks or 4-column editorial layouts—you can save your configuration directly inside the dialog. Click the Preset dropdown menu at the top, select Save Preset, and name your layout. The next time you open a blank canvas, you can apply the entire column structure with a single click. Click OK to apply the guides to your document.
