Fix Skewed Documents with the Perspective Crop Tool
Photographing documents with a smartphone or camera often results in keystoning, where the page appears angled, distorted, or wider on one side than the other. The Perspective Crop Tool, available in standard image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, offers a simple and precise solution. This guide explains how to isolate the four corners of an angled document, correct the geometric distortion, and output a clean, flat, rectangular image in just a few steps.
Step 1: Select the Perspective Crop Tool
Open your image in your editor. In Photoshop, click and hold the standard Crop Tool in the Tools panel to reveal the flyout menu, then select the Perspective Crop Tool (or press Shift + C until it appears).
Step 2: Define the Document Boundary
Instead of dragging a standard rectangular box, click sequentially on the four corners of the skewed document:
- Click the top-left corner of the document page.
- Click the top-right corner.
- Click the bottom-right corner.
- Click the bottom-left corner.
Once all four points are set, a bounding box with an internal grid will appear, mapping over the angled surface of the document.
Step 3: Fine-Tune the Corner Handles
Zoom in close to each corner to verify alignment. Click and drag the corner anchor points so they match the exact edges of the paper. Aligning these points precisely against the document's true perimeter prevents text from remaining slightly tilted after the crop is applied.
Step 4: Execute the Crop
Once the grid accurately outlines the distorted document, commit the crop by pressing Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS), or by clicking the checkmark icon in the options bar. The software will remap the pixels within the designated boundary, flattening the perspective and transforming the trapezoidal shape into a clean, flat rectangle that fills the canvas.
Best Practices for Clean Results
- Clear Edges: Ensure the background contrasts with the paper so you can clearly identify all four corners.
- Resolution Settings: In the tool's options bar, you can leave the Width, Height, and Resolution fields blank to maintain the original pixel proportions, or enter specific dimensions (such as standard Letter or A4 dimensions) to automatically size the final output.
- Curved Pages: The Perspective Crop Tool handles flat planar skewing. If the page is folded or curved, such as in a thick bound book, flatten the physical page as much as possible prior to taking the photo to avoid residual waviness.
