GNOME Outreach Committee Role in Google Summer of Code

The GNOME Outreach Committee plays a central administrative, promotional, and mentoring role in the GNOME Foundation’s annual participation in Google Summer of Code (GSoC). By acting as the operational bridge between Google, project mentors, and prospective contributors, the committee coordinates organizational applications, curates project proposals, facilitates contributor onboarding, and ensures participants successfully integrate into the broader GNOME ecosystem.

Organizational Administration and GSoC Liaison

The committee oversees the administrative responsibilities required for GNOME to participate as an official mentoring organization in GSoC. Members prepare and submit GNOME's annual organization application, manage compliance with Google's program requirements, and liaise directly with GSoC program administrators. They also handle the allocation of project slots granted by Google, distributing them fairly across various GNOME software modules and teams.

Project Ideation and Mentor Coordination

To prepare for each program cycle, the Outreach Committee coordinates the call for mentors and projects across the GNOME community. Their responsibilities include:

  • Creating and maintaining the official GSoC ideas list.
  • Ensuring that project proposals are well-scoped, realistic for a 12-to-22-week timeline, and directly beneficial to GNOME.
  • Vetting and confirming mentors, ensuring each project has dedicated contributors capable of providing regular technical feedback and guidance.

Contributor Selection and Application Review

During the application phase, the committee directs new contributors through GNOME’s contribution processes. Committee members establish requirements for applicants—such as submitting an initial merge request to demonstrate foundational skills—and guide mentors on evaluating student proposals. Once the submission period ends, the committee organizes mentor reviews and finalizes the candidate selections submitted to Google.

Program Monitoring and Conflict Resolution

Throughout the coding period, the Outreach Committee monitors project health and milestone completions. They ensure that mentors and contributors submit their midterm and final evaluations on time. If communication issues, scope creep, or mentor availability problems arise, committee members step in to mediate, offer administrative guidance, or assign backup mentors when necessary.

Long-Term Community Integration

Beyond program mechanics, the committee focuses on retention. They actively work to make the onboarding experience inclusive and positive, encouraging GSoC interns to stay involved with GNOME as regular contributors, apply for foundation membership, or present their work at conferences like GUADEC.
