GNOME Engagement Team Social Media and News Role
The GNOME Engagement Team serves as the primary communication bridge between the GNOME Project and the wider open-source community, coordinating outreach, public relations, and community journalism. By managing official social media feeds, drafting press releases, and amplifying contributor milestones, the team ensures that developments within the GNOME desktop environment and developer platform are communicated effectively, consistently, and transparently to users, developers, and media outlets worldwide.
Managing Official Social Media Channels
The Engagement Team is responsible for maintaining GNOME's active presence across major social networks, including decentralized platforms like Mastodon on the Fediverse, as well as traditional networks such as X, LinkedIn, and YouTube. The team curates posts that highlight software updates, promote community events, and share insights into open-source software development.
In addition to broadcasting updates, the team monitors mentions, interacts with the community, and directs user inquiries to appropriate forums such as Discourse, Matrix channels, or GitLab issues. This creates a welcoming environment for both newcomers and veteran contributors while maintaining GNOME’s values and code of conduct online.
Coordinating Press Releases and Major Releases
Every six months, GNOME releases a major version of its desktop environment. The Engagement Team collaborates closely with the Release Team, designers, and documentation writers to translate technical changes into compelling, accessible announcements.
Key tasks in this process include:
- Writing and distributing official press releases to technology journalists and news platforms.
- Creating and curating promotional materials, including release videos, feature summaries, and changelogs.
- Coordinating with downstream distributions, such as Fedora and Ubuntu, to align messaging on when end users can expect updates.
Amplifying Community News and Initiatives
Community recognition is central to the Engagement Team's mission. The team actively surfaces achievements from across GNOME's diverse working groups, Foundation initiatives, and individual contributors.
The team supports regular community roundups—such as the "This Week in GNOME" (TWIG) initiative—which showcase bug fixes, design improvements, and third-party app progress made within the GNOME ecosystem. By spotlighting both core contributors and independent app developers using GTK and Libadwaita, the team fosters sustained engagement and attracts new talent to the project.
Promoting Conferences and Outreach Programs
The Engagement Team plays a key promotional role for GNOME's signature conferences, primarily the GNOME Users' and Developers' European Conference (GUADEC), GNOME.Asia, and local hackfests. They manage call-for-papers (CFP) marketing, registration drives, and real-time coverage during the events.
Furthermore, the team acts as a publicity engine for diversity and mentoring initiatives, including GNOME’s participation in Outreachy and Google Summer of Code (GSoC). By sharing the experiences and accomplishments of interns and mentors, the team helps sustain the influx of new contributors necessary for the project's long-term health.
