What Does Alt-Click on a GIMP Layer Mask Do?

Holding the Alt key and clicking a layer mask thumbnail in GIMP toggles the "Show Layer Mask" feature, displaying the mask directly on the canvas as a grayscale image. This article explains what happens during this shortcut, why it is useful for precision editing, how to exit this mode, and other related layer mask shortcuts.

What Happens on the Canvas and Layers Dialog

When you hold Alt and click on the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers dialog:

  1. Canvas View Changes: The canvas stops displaying your layer's standard visual content and instead displays the black, white, and gray values of the layer mask across the entire layer boundaries.
  2. Thumbnail Outline Changes: A green outline appears around the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers dialog. This visual indicator signifies that "Show Layer Mask" mode is currently active.

Why View the Mask Directly?

Viewing the layer mask directly helps you perform detailed mask corrections that are difficult to see during standard editing:

  • Finding Incomplete Masking: Faint, semi-transparent strokes or missed spots become clearly visible as gray or black specks on a pure white background (or vice versa).
  • Precise Edge Refinement: You can inspect feathered edges, hair cutouts, and soft transitions to ensure gradients and blends are smooth.
  • Applying Filters Directly: You can apply blurs, noise, threshold adjustments, or sharpen filters to the mask while seeing the exact effect on the mask's values in real time.

How to Exit "Show Layer Mask" Mode

To return to your normal image view:

  • Hold Alt and click the layer mask thumbnail again.
  • Alternatively, right-click the layer in the Layers dialog and uncheck Show Layer Mask.

Once disabled, the green border around the thumbnail disappears, and the canvas returns to showing the full composite image with the mask applied normally.

  • Regular Click: Selects the mask for editing without changing the canvas view (indicated by a white outline around the thumbnail).
  • Ctrl + Click: Toggles Disable Layer Mask. This temporarily disables the mask's effect entirely, indicated by a red outline around the thumbnail.
