Transfer Selection Mask Between Images in GIMP
Transferring an active selection mask between two open images with identical canvas dimensions in GIMP can be accomplished quickly without misaligning your work. This article explains the two most efficient ways to copy a selection from one document to another: using the Quick Mask feature for rapid transfers, and using the Channels dialog for reusable masks.
Method 1: The Quick Mask Method (Fastest)
The Quick Mask feature converts your selection into a temporary grayscale pixel layer, allowing you to copy and paste the exact mask data using standard clipboard commands.
- Activate Quick Mask in the Source Image: With your selection active in the first document, press Shift + Q (or go to Select > Toggle Quick Mask). Your image will display a red overlay representing the unselected areas.
- Copy the Mask: Press Ctrl + C (or Edit > Copy) to copy the mask data directly to your clipboard.
- Toggle Quick Mask off: Press Shift + Q to return the first document to standard selection mode.
- Switch to the Target Image: Click on the tab of your second image document.
- Activate Quick Mask in the Target Image: Press Shift + Q to enable Quick Mask on the target canvas.
- Paste the Mask: Press Ctrl + V (or Edit > Paste).
- Anchor the Floating Selection: Click the anchor icon at the bottom of the Layers dialog, or press Ctrl + H, to anchor the pasted mask in place.
- Restore the Selection: Press Shift + Q to toggle off the Quick Mask. The imported mask will convert back into an active selection outline.
Method 2: The Channels Method (Best for Reusability)
If you plan to reuse the selection multiple times across sessions, storing it as a dedicated channel allows you to transfer the mask directly between canvases.
- Save Selection to Channel: In your source document, go to the top menu and click Select > Save to Channel.
- Open the Channels Tab: In the dockable dialog panel (usually grouped with the Layers panel), click the Channels tab. You will see an entry named "Selection Mask copy" at the bottom of the list.
- Drag to the Target Document:
- Click and hold the saved channel from the Channels list.
- Drag the cursor onto the tab of the target image at the top of the workspace.
- Once the target image displays on the screen, release the mouse button over the canvas.
- Convert Channel to Selection:
- In the target image's Channels tab, locate the imported channel.
- Right-click the channel and select Channel to Selection (or click the red selection icon at the bottom of the Channels panel).
Because both documents share the exact same canvas dimensions, the selection will position itself in the target image with pixel-perfect accuracy.
