Straighten a Horizon in GIMP with Measure Tool

Fixing a tilted horizon is a common post-processing task that instantly improves the composition of landscape and outdoor photos. In GIMP, the Measure tool provides a fast, precise, and automated way to level uneven horizons without manually guessing rotation angles. This guide walks you through the exact steps to measure an angle and automatically straighten your image in just a few clicks.

Step 1: Open Your Image

Launch GIMP and open the photo containing the crooked horizon by going to File > Open or pressing Ctrl + O (Cmd + O on macOS).

Step 2: Select the Measure Tool

Choose the Measure Tool from the Toolbox, access it via the menu under Tools > Measure, or use the keyboard shortcut Shift + M.

Step 3: Draw Along the Crooked Horizon

  1. Click on one end of the tilted horizon line in your photo.
  2. Drag the cursor across the screen following the exact slant of the horizon.
  3. Release the mouse button at the opposite end.

A guide line will appear, and GIMP will calculate the exact angle of tilt.

Step 4: Click the Straighten Button

Look at the Tool Options panel (usually located on the left dock under the Toolbox):

  1. Locate the Straighten button at the bottom of the Measure Tool options.
  2. If needed, choose your preferred interpolation method or clipping mode (e.g., Crop to result to automatically cut off tilted edges).
  3. Click Straighten.

GIMP will instantly rotate the canvas by the calculated degree, aligning the line perfectly horizontal.

Step 5: Crop the Excess Edges

Rotating an image leaves empty, transparent corners around the borders. Select the Crop Tool (Shift + C) and drag a rectangle over the leveled area to remove the transparent margins, then press Enter to finalize the edit.
