Snap Rectangle Selections to Guides in GIMP

This guide explains how to convert a guide grid into a series of snapped rectangular selections in GIMP. By enabling the application's native snapping behavior and utilizing the Rectangle Select Tool's combination modes, you can accurately capture individual grid cells or an entire series of adjacent regions. Following these steps ensures your selections align precisely with your existing guide intersections without manual pixel alignment.

Step 1: Enable Guide Snapping

Before drawing selections, ensure that the canvas actively attracts selection boundaries to your guides:

  1. Open your image containing the guide grid.
  2. Go to the top menu and click View.
  3. Verify that Snap to Guides is checked. If it is not, click it to enable it.

Step 2: Set Up the Rectangle Select Tool

Configure the selection tool to snap and handle multiple areas:

  1. Select the Rectangle Select Tool from the Toolbox or press the shortcut key R.
  2. In the Tool Options panel (typically docked on the left or right), look at the Mode settings.
  3. Choose your desired selection behavior:
    • Select Replace the current selection (first icon) if you intend to work through each grid cell individually.
    • Select Add to the current selection (second icon, or hold Shift) if you want to select multiple or all grid cells simultaneously as a compound selection.

Step 3: Draw the Snapped Selections

Create the selections using the intersections of the guides:

  1. Hover your cursor near the intersection of two guides where your target cell begins. The cursor pointer will adjust or snap to the intersection point.
  2. Click and drag diagonally across the cell toward the opposite guide intersection.
  3. Release the mouse button once the pointer snaps to the diagonal intersection. The selection box will now be locked precisely to the guide boundary.
  4. If building a series of selections, repeat this process in the remaining grid cells while keeping the Add to current selection mode active.

Step 4: Store or Separate the Selections (Optional)

Once you have created your selections, you can preserve them or split your content based on them:

  • Save as Channels: Go to Select > Save to Channel to store the selection mask permanently in the Channels dialog for future recall.
  • Convert to Paths: Go to Select > To Path to convert the rectangular edges into vector paths.
  • Slice to Layers: With a cell selected, press Ctrl + C (Copy) and Ctrl + V (Paste), then click the New Layer button in the Layers panel to separate each grid region onto its own layer.
