Rotate Brush Tips by Stroke Direction in GIMP

Configuring custom brush dynamics in GIMP allows you to automatically align your brush tip with the path of your stroke. This tutorial explains how to access the Paint Dynamics editor, map the brush angle to stroke direction, and fine-tune your settings to create dynamic, natural-looking strokes for asymmetrical brushes, calligraphy, or custom patterns.

Step 1: Open the Paint Dynamics Dialog

  1. Open GIMP.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paint Dynamics.
  3. The Paint Dynamics panel will appear in your dock, displaying a list of pre-installed dynamics presets.

Step 2: Create a New Paint Dynamic

Because default presets are locked for editing, you must create a new dynamic:

  1. At the bottom of the Paint Dynamics panel, click the Create a new dynamics button (the blank page icon).
  2. Alternatively, right-click any existing dynamic and choose Duplicate Dynamics.
  3. The Paint Dynamics Editor will open. Rename your dynamic to something descriptive, such as "Rotate to Direction."

Step 3: Map Brush Angle to Stroke Direction

The Dynamics Editor features a matrix with brush properties on the vertical axis and input behaviors on the horizontal axis.

  1. Locate the Angle row along the left side.
  2. Follow the row across to the Direction column.
  3. Check the box at the intersection of Angle and Direction.

Step 4: Apply and Test the Dynamic

  1. Select the Paintbrush tool (or press P).
  2. In the Tool Options dockable dialog, find the Dynamics section.
  3. Click the dynamics icon and select your newly created "Rotate to Direction" dynamic from the list.
  4. Choose an asymmetrical brush tip (such as an oval, chisel tip, or patterned shape) to clearly see the rotation effect.
  5. Draw a curved line on your canvas. The brush tip will rotate smoothly to follow the direction of your cursor movement.

Step 5: Fine-Tune the Behavior (Optional)

  • Base Angle: In the Tool Options panel, adjust the Angle slider if your brush starts at an offset orientation relative to the movement vector.
  • Aspect Ratio: Squeeze a round brush tip by lowering its Aspect Ratio in Tool Options to quickly create a directional calligraphy effect without needing a custom brush asset.
  • Smooth Stroke: Enable the Smooth Stroke option in Tool Options to reduce jitter and produce cleaner rotation angles along tight curves.
