Reverse Path Direction for Text in GIMP

When creating text along a path in GIMP, text flows strictly from the vector path’s start point to its endpoint, which can cause characters to appear upside down or run backwards. GIMP does not have a dedicated "invert path" button, but you can reverse the direction of a path using the Flip Tool configured to transform paths. This guide outlines the exact steps to flip the path's vector direction and align your text properly.

Step 1: Make the Path Active

  1. Open the Paths dialog by navigating to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paths.
  2. Click on the path you want to reverse to ensure it is selected.
  3. Click the eye icon next to the path in the list to make it visible on the canvas.

Step 2: Configure the Flip Tool

  1. Select the Flip Tool from the Toolbox, or press the keyboard shortcut Shift + P.
  2. Look at the Tool Options dock (typically located below the Toolbox on the left).
  3. Under the Transform section at the top of the Tool Options, click the Path icon (the icon resembling a red square with vector curve handles) rather than the default "Layer" icon.
  4. Set the Direction option to Horizontal (or Vertical, depending on whether your path is oriented vertically or horizontally).

Step 3: Flip the Path to Reverse Direction

  1. Hover your cursor over the path on the canvas.
  2. Click directly on the path.
  3. The vector endpoints and flow direction will invert immediately. For symmetrical shapes like circles, ovals, or symmetric arches, the visual shape remains identical, but the internal node order (direction) is now reversed.

(Note: For asymmetrical paths, flipping mirrors the shape. If you need the exact original shape preserved, flip it, apply the text, and then use the Rotate or Flip tools to adjust the orientation back as needed).

Step 4: Apply the Text Along the Reversed Path

  1. Select the text layer you wish to place along the curve in the Layers dialog.
  2. Activate the Text Tool (T).
  3. In the Text Tool Options dock, click the Text along Path button (or right-click the text layer in the Layers panel and choose Text along Path).
  4. GIMP will generate a new path containing your text outlines, now following the reversed direction of the vector path right-side up.
  5. Create a new transparent layer, convert the newly generated text path into a selection (Select > From Path), and fill it with your desired color (Edit > Fill with FG Color).
