How to Use the Unified Transform Tool in GIMP
The Unified Transform tool in GIMP allows you to perform multiple transformations—including scaling, rotating, shearing, moving, and adjusting perspective—simultaneously within a single interactive session. By combining these functions into one tool, you can adjust an image layer, selection, or path in real time without the quality loss associated with executing multiple separate transform operations.
Activating the Tool
Select the Unified Transform tool from the Toolbox, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + U, or navigate to Tools > Transform Tools > Unified Transform from the top menu. Ensure the target layer is active in the Layers panel before making adjustments.
Manipulating the Transformation Handles
Once the tool is activated on your target, a bounding box equipped with multiple interactive handles will appear around the object. Each handle provides a distinct transformation depending on where you click and drag:
- Move: Click and drag anywhere inside the bounding frame (away from the outer handles) to reposition the object.
- Scale: Click and drag the large square handles located on the sides or corners to resize the layer horizontally, vertically, or proportionally.
- Rotate: Move your cursor just outside any of the corner handles until the icon changes to a curved arrow, then click and drag around the center pivot point.
- Shear: Click and drag the diamond-shaped handles located along the edges between corners to slant the image along that axis.
- Perspective / 3D Distortion: Click and drag the small diamond or square handles located directly at the outermost corners to move individual corners independently, modifying the perspective plane.
Using Keyboard Modifiers
Fine-tune your simultaneous transformations using keyboard shortcuts while dragging handles:
- Shift: Constrains aspect ratios during scaling, locks shearing to a single axis, or snaps rotation to 15-degree increments.
- Ctrl (Command on macOS): Scales or transforms the object relative to its center point rather than the opposite handle.
Applying the Changes
The Unified Transform tool generates a live preview while you adjust various handles consecutively without applying them individually. Once you achieve the desired combination of scale, rotation, shear, and perspective, press Enter or click the Transform button inside the floating transformation dialog window. GIMP will then compute and render all adjustments simultaneously in a single interpolation pass.
